Subject Choice for Leaving Cert

TYs and non-TY Third Years will be asked to choose their subjects for Leaving Cert early in the new year. Take some time to familiarise yourself!

At the moment, the unofficial list of options subjects is as follows (full confirmation closer to the time):

Business, Accounting, Economics,
Physics, Biology, Chemistry
History, Geography
Music, Art, Home Economics
Construction
French, German
Applied Maths?

Students will be asked to choose any six subjects from this list and rank them in order of preference. Students will be allocated any four from this list with the ones higher up the list being more likely.
Note: Students must have studied a subject at Junior Cert level in order to continue at LC level.

Trinity College Dublin Open Day and alert list

TCD Open Day takes place on Sat Dec. 9 from 9am to 3:30pm
See website for more info or the following link for the undergraduate prospectus

https://www.tcd.ie/study/assets/PDF/Trinity_Undergrad_Prospectus_2018_Web.pdf

Alert List for 2018 entry

Course name change
Students applying to enter the Trinity Bachelor in Business Studies course (TR080) will in 2018 apply to ‘Global Business’. This name change better reflects the substance of the course but does not signify a change in degree awarded or course content.
Courses such as B.E.S.S. (TR081), Business Studies and a Language (TR085, TR086, TR087, TR089, TR089), Computer Science and Business (TR082) or Business and Law (TR017) are not affected.

New entry routes to Science Courses
Students seeking entry to Trinity’s Science Courses in 2018, will now have four separate entry routes to choose from, signifying four integrated study paths: Biological & Biomedical Sciences (TR060); Chemical Sciences (TR061); Geography & Geosciences (TR062); Physical Sciences (TR063).
These streams now incorporate the ‘Common Entry Science’ Course (TR071), as well as a number of former direct entry courses.
Information regarding these changes is available at the following link: https://www.tcd.ie/Science/streams/

Change to Admission Requirements for entry in 2019

For students applying to enter the Pharmacy course (TR072) in Trinity College in 2019 the entry requirements will be as follows:
1.            O4/H6 in mathematics (no change)
2.            H4 in Chemistry OR Physics/Chemistry (previously H5 in Chemistry)
and H4 in one of physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, geology, geography, applied mathematics, agricultural science. Physics/Chemistry may not be presented with physics or chemistry to satisfy requirements.

Feasibility Study in Admissions for Leaving Certificate Students

For the fifth year Trinity is pioneering a feasibility study in admissions to see if there is a better and fairer way to identify and admit Leaving Certificate applicants who are enthusiastic and passionate about learning, motivated and suitable for their chosen courses. The admissions route will be used to fill 10 places in History (TR003), 10 places in Law (TR004) and 5 places in Ancient and Medieval History and Culture (TR028). Further details are available on page 246 of the Undergraduate Prospectus 2018 and on the Study at Trinity website:  www.tcd.ie/study/apply/alternative-paths-to-trinity/.

Subject choice

Subject choice is an important decision-making process that, among other things, involves matching up your likes/dislikes/ abilities/ career interests and opportunities and so forth. One part of this decision-making process is researching what these subjects are actually about and the opportunities that they may lead into. Another factor is keeping your options open eg. in the area of science at Junior Cycle level. With this in mind, here are a few links to help get you informed. For any other queries please contact me at the school. (Mr. O'Reilly, Guidance Counsellor)

UCD accomodation

From the 10th May CAO students can place their details (CAO Number, First Name, Last Name, Date of Birth) on a priority waiting list on site accommodation in UCD.

UCD prioritises CAO students as a cohort that benefit most from the opportunity to live on campus, to form friendships and avail of the many on campus facilities. For the 2017-18 academic year there are 1,035 beds allocated to first year CAO students, all of which are on the Belfield campus. For more information visit our Allocation Policy page.
In order to put a name on the waiting list prospective students need to have chosen a course in UCD on their CAO application. On the 10th May prospective students should visit www.ucd.ie/residences and follow the on-screen instructions.
CAO application numbers need to be at hand as the application process cannot be completed without it. This is all that needs to be done until CAO offers are issued in August. For further information see our booking information and step by step guide at www.ucd.ie/residences.
Students looking for off campus accommodation can access information and support from our Accommodation and Booking Support Office. Our UCD Accommodation Booking & Support Office is based at the rear of the Merville Central Office in the Merville Student Residences and is open all year round where students can refer to UCD accommodation support staff. For assistance with sourcing off campus accommodation please visit www.ucdaccommodationpad.ie.
The office is open from 9.00am to 5pm Monday to Friday and hours will be extended during busy periods. The Accommodation & Booking Support Office can be contacted on +353 1 716 5772 or +353 1 716 5773.
